Causes of engine cylinder liner damage and maintenance methods

2021-09-07

Analysis of Cylinder Liner Wear Causes The cylinder liner operates in a harsh environment, leading to numerous causes of wear. Normal wear is usually allowed due to design reasons; however, improper use and maintenance can result in abnormal wear.

  I. Analysis of Cylinder Liner Wear Causes

  1. Prolonged low-temperature operation. Prolonged low-temperature operation leads to poor combustion, with carbon deposits spreading from the top of the cylinder liner, causing severe abrasive wear in the upper part of the cylinder liner; it also causes electrochemical corrosion.

  2. High pressure on the upper part, resulting in greater wear at the top of the cylinder. Under the action of its own elasticity and back pressure, the piston ring presses tightly against the cylinder wall. The greater the positive pressure, the more difficult it is to form and maintain the lubricating oil film, and the mechanical wear intensifies. During the working stroke, as the piston descends, the positive pressure gradually decreases, so the cylinder wear is heavier at the top than at the bottom.

  3. Entry of mechanical impurities, exacerbating wear in the middle of the cylinder. Dust in the air and impurities in the lubricating oil enter the space between the piston and the cylinder wall, causing abrasive wear. As dust or impurities reciprocate in the cylinder with the piston, the higher speed of movement at the middle of the cylinder exacerbates the wear in the middle of the cylinder.

  4. Poor lubricating oil filter performance. If the lubricating oil filter is not working properly, the lubricating oil is not effectively filtered, and the lubricating oil containing a large number of hard particles will inevitably exacerbate the wear of the inner wall of the cylinder liner.

  5. Low air filter efficiency. The function of the air filter is to remove dust and sand from the air entering the cylinder to reduce wear on parts such as the cylinder, piston, and piston rings. Experiments show that if the engine is not equipped with an air filter, the cylinder wear will increase 6-8 times. If the air filter is not cleaned and maintained for a long time, the filtering effect will be poor, which will accelerate the wear of the cylinder liner.

  6. Poor lubrication conditions, resulting in severe wear at the top of the cylinder liner. The upper part of the cylinder liner is close to the combustion chamber, the temperature is very high, and the lubrication conditions are poor. Fresh air and un-evaporated fuel flush and dilute, exacerbating the deterioration of the upper conditions, causing the upper part of the cylinder to be in a dry friction or semi-dry friction state, which is the reason for the serious wear of the upper part of the cylinder.

Correct selection of lubricating oil Strictly select lubricating oil with the best viscosity according to the season and engine performance requirements. Do not use inferior lubricating oil at will, and regularly check and maintain the quantity and quality of lubricating oil. Strengthen filter maintenance Maintaining the good working condition of the air filter, oil filter, and fuel filter is crucial to reducing cylinder liner wear. These methods are effective ways to maintain the engine cylinder liner.
