What material is the cylinder liner made of?

2021-09-07

Most engine blocks and cylinder liners are cast as a single unit. Some use aluminum alloy for the cylinder block and alloy cast iron for the cylinder liner. Alloy cast iron cylinder liners can be cast into the cylinder block using a low-pressure casting method, or they can be combined with the cylinder block using an interference fit. Using aluminum alloy for the cylinder block reduces engine weight and improves heat dissipation. Cylinder liners are divided into two main categories: dry liners and wet liners. Dry liners do not contact the coolant on the back side, while wet liners are in contact with the coolant on the back side. Dry liners are thinner, simpler in structure, and easier to process. Wet liners are in direct contact with the coolant, which aids in engine cooling and contributes to smaller and lighter engine designs.
