Analysis of the causes of cylinder liner wear and introduction to cylinder liner maintenance knowledge

2021-09-07

The engine cylinder liner and piston rings are a pair of friction pairs that operate under high temperature, high pressure, alternating load, and corrosive conditions. Long-term operation under complex and variable conditions results in wear and deformation of the cylinder liner, affecting the engine's power, rationality, and service life. Below, let the editor of the car repair website briefly introduce the causes of cylinder liner wear and good maintenance methods!

Analysis of the Causes of Cylinder Liner Wear and Good Maintenance Methods:

When the engine starts cold, due to the low temperature, the engine oil viscosity is high, and the fluidity is poor, resulting in insufficient oil supply from the engine oil pump. At the same time, the engine oil on the original cylinder wall flows down along the cylinder wall after parking, so it does not get good lubrication during the starting moment, causing the cylinder wall wear to increase significantly during starting. Therefore, during the first start, the engine should be idled for a few revolutions to allow the friction surface to be lubricated before starting. After starting, the engine should be idled to warm up, and sudden acceleration should be strictly prohibited. Start driving only after the engine oil temperature reaches 40℃; when starting, use low gear and gradually shift through each gear for a certain distance until the oil temperature is normal before switching to normal driving.

It is necessary to strictly use lubricating oil with a high viscosity value according to the season and engine performance requirements. Inferior lubricating oil should not be used arbitrarily, and the quantity and quality of lubricating oil should be frequently checked and maintained.

Maintaining the air filter, engine oil filter, and fuel filter in good working condition is crucial for reducing cylinder liner wear. Strengthening the maintenance of the three filters is a crucial measure to prevent mechanical impurities from entering the cylinder, reduce cylinder wear, and extend the service life of the engine, which is particularly important in rural areas and areas with much wind and sand. Some drivers do not install air filters to save fuel, which is incorrect.

The normal operating temperature of the engine should be between 80-90℃. If the temperature is too low, good lubrication cannot be maintained, which will increase the wear of the cylinder wall. The water vapor in the cylinder is easy to condense into water droplets, dissolving acidic gas molecules in the exhaust gas to form acidic substances, causing corrosive wear on the cylinder wall. Experiments show that when the cylinder wall temperature drops from 90℃ to 50℃, the cylinder wear is 4 times that at 90℃. If the temperature is too high, the cylinder strength will decrease, increasing wear, and may even cause the piston to expand excessively, leading to cylinder expansion accidents.
